We love writing!

What do you love?
We learned that good writers write
about what they love!
Today we made Heart Maps
to show who and what we love.
We will use these as ideas for writing.

I couldn't resist taking this picture!
Aren't these children so cute
at the Listening Center?

Welcome to our classroom!

I have spent the past few weeks getting the classroom ready for a wonderful bunch of students.  This year, as of today, I have 16 sweet cherubs.  I am excited to have a small class and am giddy about exploring the possibilities with this crew.  I must say, my classroom has never looked better!  This summer, I was bit by the crafting and organizing bug (my poor hubby who had endure this)!  After organizing and painting rooms in my house, not to mention re-decorating my home office, I pounced on my classroom.  It is super organized, super clean, and I think, super cute and inviting.  Check it out!

Telling Time and Counting Money

The First Graders have been learning about telling time to the hour and half hour and counting money to $1.00. We love playing fun math games to help us practice our developing skills. Check out these fun sites for extra practice!

Writing Wizards

We have been Writing Wizards this week!  Our class thought the story Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing was such a funny book!  We decided to make our own class version.  Here are some samples!

We also wrote about How to Make a Snowman.  First you have to gather the materials and then you can begin to build!

We have been working on strategies to help us
read words accurately.

Chunky Monkey reminds us to look for smaller chunks (word parts) in bigger words.

Lips the Fish reminds us to "get our mouths ready" by saying
the first sound in the word.

Stretchy the Snake reminds us to stretch words out.

Eagle Eye reminds us to look at the pictures
to figure out tricky words.

Flippy the Dolphin teaches us to try both vowel sounds, long and short, to see if we can figure out the tricky words.  We "flip the vowel sound".

Hoppy the Frog teaches us to skip the tricky word, hop over it, read to the end, and then re-read
to figure out the word.
Tryin' Lion teaches us to try a new word
and see if the new word makes sense.
